Abstract - Between Beauty and Eeriness. Tradition of gothic convention and aesthetics

Article analyses different aspects of modern gothic culture and its aesthetics. Starting from the gothic tradition and primal human fears and obsessions, through dark ages of medieval times, romantic movement and decadent dark visions, shows how gothic convention was created and modified. Author also explains how gothic aesthetics is constantly adopted by popular culture and how it finds its place in postmodern cultural reality. It’s because gothic is not only a literature genre or youth subculture, but for many – a philosophical perspective; ghastly and eerie filter for modern reality, a way to see the world. It’s a grotesque mixture of beauty, passion and charm with decay and sinister visions. This article shows different perspectives on gothic tradition, its history and the present day, from ancient myths to modern mainstream culture.
