Abstract - Teaching Japanese fencing as a complete pedagogical and methodological system based on SLR (Systematic Literature Review)
Background. The Japanese art of swordsmanship (kendo) and other traditional martial arts transcend the mere acquisition of physical techniques. They embody profound philosophical and pedagogical principles, positioning the practice as a holistic educational system aimed at fostering physical, intellectual, and moral development [Mogyorosi 2024; Pfister 2017]. Grounded in Confucianism, Zen Buddhism [Cynarski 2022], and the bushido code of ethics [Holt 2023], these principles form integral components of instructional methodologies and learning processes.
Problem. This investigation aims to examine comprehensively how Japanese swordsmanship instruction can be interpreted as a complete pedagogical system and its relevance in contemporary educational contexts. The primary research questions were as follows:
– What pedagogical principles underlie kendo teaching?
– How does this contribute to learners’ personal development?
– What teaching methods are employed, and how are they integrated into learners’ daily lives?
Our hypothesis posits that Kendo education is an integrated pedagogical system that effectively enhances learners’ physical, intellectual, and moral abilities.
Method. The study employed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology [Page et al. 2020]. A systematic review of academic sources resulted in the inclusion of 15 relevant studies that were analysed to address the research objectives.
Results. These findings demonstrate that kendo training functions as a multi-faceted pedagogical system. Physical training not only develops technical skills, but also cultivates persistence, self-discipline, and physical endurance [Eime et al. 2013; Logan et al. 2019]. Furthermore, the mentor-student relationship, which is predicated on trust and mutual respect, provides learners with role models and guidance. These elements collectively contribute to learners’ holistic personal development and foster skills that are transferable to everyday life.
Conclusions. This systematic review underscores kendo’s pedagogical significance and demonstrates its applicability in contemporary educational practices. The principles of kendo education can be utilised in personality development and moral education to support the comprehensive growth of students. This study provides theoretical insights into the educational value of traditional Japanese martial arts and offers practical recommendations for educators interested in holistic teaching methods.
